First KONČAR Voltage Regulators in the UK

Konreg S1000 type voltage regulators have been utilised for the first time in the UK on the Lynemouth Power Station biomass conversion project (North East England). The station consists of three 155MVA units, all of which are now running with S1000 based excitation systems.

The KONregS1000 based excitation system is single channel for the pilot exciter and dual channel for the main exciter, a total of three regulators per unit. KONČAR – ELECTRONICS AND INFORMATICS Ltd. for production and services (INEM) delivered the KONreg S1000 regulators along with engineering and software support; Excitation & Engineering Services (EES) designed and manufactured the overall system.

Commissioning of the first unit commenced in January 2018 and was performed by both KONČAR and EES.

KONČAR and EES worked together to implement new functionality to the S1000 such as the manual restrictive limiter, in order to meet the UK National Grid code requirements.

Grants for the project “KONTRAC GP170DC_SK – Development of the tramway propulsion converter with supercapacitor module”

KONČAR – ELECTRONICS AND INFORMATICS Ltd. for production and services has applied for an open call from the Ministry of Economy, Entrepreneurship and Crafts of the Republic of Croatia for the awarding of grants for the project “KONTRAC GP170DC_SK – Development of the tramway propulsion converter with supercapacitor module”. The project was approved, and the Grant Agreement was signed on 2nd November 2018 at the Ministry of Economy, Entrepreneurship and Crafts of the Republic of Croatia.

This is a research and development project and it will be financed from the European Regional Development Fund, that is intended for increasing the development of new products and services that result from research and development activities. Partner of the project applicant, KONČAR – ELECTRONICS AND INFORMATICS Ltd. for production and services, is University of Zagreb, Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing. The project is to be realized within 36 months. Industrial research will last for the first two years of the project, and the experimental development will take place in the third project year.

The total eligible costs of the project amount to HRK 10,558,168.91, and the grant is HRK 6,528,270.54.

By the project “KONTRAC GP170DC_SK – Development of the tramway propulsion converter with supercapacitor module ” the project applicant, KONČAR – ELECTRONICS AND INFORMATICS Ltd. for production and services, and its project partner, University of Zagreb, Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing, are launching industrial research and experimental development in the field of advanced transport systems. The aim of the project is mastering the development and innovation of high value-added equipment by which the energy efficiency of existing solutions in the field of transport systems is being increased. The obtained results will be used for later commercial application thanks to the main realized project aims: developed tramway propulsion converter with a braking energy storage unit for the vehicle and its subsequent use, developed energy storage unit with built-in system for uniform voltage cell distribution, developed and implemented algorithms of controlling charging and discharging cycles of energy storage units that will increase energy efficiency and ensure the maximum lifetime of the energy storage units and technical documentation for the serial production of the tramway propulsion converter and energy storage units. The project envisages registration of a trademark, industrial design and a patent.

During development of the tramway propulsion converter with the energy storage units, the existing knowledge and skills acquired in the production of converters will be applied, especially in the production of converters for rail vehicles, and the project activities and expected results represent also a new step in the field of research and development of converter technology in the Republic of Croatia. By production of the tramway propulsion converter with energy storage units, the production assortment of the project applicant, KONČAR – ELECTRONICS AND INFORMATICS Ltd. for production and services will be enlarged, thereby enabling the appliance and appearance in markets that explicitly require the use of this technology. When developing the energy management algorithms, within the converter and at the vehicle level, it will be necessary to explore and apply new knowledge which will result in multi-sectoral performance (additional development of monitoring, diagnostics and networking using newer and more modern processor modules on the converter).

Signed contract for project KONPRO 2

The company KONČAR – ELECTRONICS AND INFORMATICS Ltd. for production and services (INEM) has applied to the tender of the Ministry of Economy, Entrepreneurship and Crafts of the Republic of Croatia for the grant for the development of the project “KONPRO 2 – Development of a new generation of numeric protection devices”. The project was approved and the Grant Agreement signed on 25th May 2018 in the Ministry.

This research and development project will be funded from the European Regional Development Fund that is intended for “Strengthening the development of new products and services resulting from R & D activities”.

The total eligible costs of the project amount to HRK 13,324,064, and the grant is HRK 8,114,783. INEM partner in this project is the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing (FER) of the University of Zagreb. The project is to be finished by 2nd May
2021, whereby industrial research will last until 1st January 2021, while the remaining time is foreseen for experimental development.

Relay protection systems are a part of the secondary equipment of the power system and their basic function is to disable defective parts of the power system. Through their function they protect the primary equipment so that there is no damage to or long-term interruptions in the power supply. Furthermore, they protect people near the fault location and allow uninterrupted power supply in the rest of the network.

The aim of the project is development and production of a new protection, measurement and control system for application in power plants. The system would use new functionalities, enhance and consolidate existing ones, and significantly expand the scope of application.

The project is a part of the overall development of a new platform of advanced microprocessor embedded systems for regulation, protection and control of power systems. The new platform would be based on distributed modular functions (hardware and software) that would be connected to the entire advanced system. The technical-economic justification of the project is increased because other similar devices for regulating and control of the processes in the power system can later be implemented as derivatives on the same platform.

The project should contribute to the continuity of product competitiveness and ensure sales growth on both the domestic and global markets. The project also includes the intellectual property protection through the registration of trademarks and design of a new product. KONČAR – INEM expects to increase its market share in this business segment and revenue from the sale of a new product through the realisation of this project.
